Later text

Acts 7:11BSB

Then famine and great suffering swept across Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers could not find food.

Earlier text

Genesis 41:54-57BSB

the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt. When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt and the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you." When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.

Significance

Stephen's recital continues: "Then famine and great suffering swept across Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers could not find food" (Acts 7:11). The account of the famine is based on Genesis 41:54-57, where "the famine was severe over all the earth" and every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain — the crisis that drives Jacob's household toward Egypt (Gen 42; cf. Ps 106:7's later retrospect on the fathers in Egypt) and so carries the covenant family into the setting of the Exodus. In the speech's argument this is redemptive-historical progression by narrative recital — no typological pivot is made at Joseph; Stephen's typological moves come downstream at Moses (Acts 7:35), the tent (7:44), and the Righteous One (7:52).
