Significance

Stephen gives the size of Jacob's household as "seventy-five in all" (Acts 7:14), following the Septuagint reckoning of Genesis 46:27 (the Hebrew text and Exodus 1:5 count seventy). The point of the tally is not arithmetic but promise: the tiny clan that goes down into Egypt is the seed to whom God had sworn descendants beyond counting (Genesis 15:5). Stephen is tracing the fidelity of God across the generations — the handful who enter Egypt will emerge a nation, every soul preserved because God keeps covenant. The same faithfulness that multiplied a household into Israel is the faithfulness that, in the fullness of time, brings from that very people the promised Seed in whom all the families of the earth are blessed.
