"The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia" (Acts 7:2). Stephen opens his defense where Israel's story opens — with sovereign grace reaching a pagan in a pagan land, before Abraham owned a foot of the promised soil and before any temple existed (Genesis 12:7 records the appearing and the land-pledge together). The God of glory is not bound to Canaan or to Jerusalem; he comes to Mesopotamia. This is the first stone in Stephen's argument against the charge that he blasphemed "this holy place": the covenant began not in a house God's people built but in an appearing God freely gave. The glory that sought Abraham in Mesopotamia is the same glory that shines in the face of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6) and that Stephen himself will behold, radiant, as he dies (Acts 7:55).
