Significance

Stephen quotes God's summons to Abraham verbatim: "'Leave your country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you'" (Acts 7:3; Genesis 12:1). The call is sheer command and sheer promise — Abraham is told to abandon everything settled and known and go toward a land not yet seen, secured by nothing but the word of God. Stephen underlines that Israel's whole existence was born of a call to leave and to trust, not of attachment to a place already possessed. The obedience of faith that founded the nation — "he went out, not knowing where he was going" (Hebrews 11:8) — is the very faith his accusers lack as they cling to temple and land while refusing the God who is calling them forward in Christ, the Seed for whose sake Abraham was ever called out at all.
