Significance

"'Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground'" (Acts 7:33; Exodus 3:5-7). The ground is holy not because of its location but because of the One who is present there; the wilderness dust becomes sacred space when God draws near. Stephen's citation strikes at the heart of the charge against him: holiness attaches to God's presence, not to a building in Jerusalem, and God's presence is not confined to any place. The same LORD who hallowed a patch of Midianite desert would, in Christ, make holy every place where his people gather in his name, and would tear the veil so that they draw near without barrier — for the true holy ground is the presence of God himself, now opened to all in the Son.
