Significance

The generation of Israelites who entered the land naturally took the appurtenances of their worship with them: "our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David" (Acts 7:45). Within Stephen's covenant-history speech this verse is a redemptive-historical waypoint — the tabernacle carried into the land, remaining until David — and it carries the name-attestation: the Greek text names Joshua Ἰησοῦς, the very name Jesus bears ("Yahweh saves"). The verse itself is narration, not an independent typological argument; the Joshua→Christ typological argument is mounted by Hebrews 4:8, which reasons from the incompleteness of the rest Joshua gave. Stephen's own typological pivots come at Moses (Acts 7:35), the tupon of the tent (7:44), and the Righteous One (7:52). The name-attestation is thus an Acts-internal datum (Ἰησοῦς in the Greek of Acts 7:45), while Joshua 3:14 carries the ark's entry, not the name; the verbal contact with the conquest-fulfilment lies at Joshua 23:9 (with Joshua 24:18).
