"At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him" (Acts 7:57). The council's fury takes the form of a lynching that apes the legal form of stoning for blasphemy (Leviticus 24:14; Deuteronomy 17:7) — the very penalty the law reserved for those who cursed God — now turned against a man filled with the Spirit who has just beheld God's glory. Stephen dies under the color of Moses' law by those who "have not kept it" (7:53). Luke's irony is exact: the guardians of the law break it to silence the witness of Christ, condemning as a blasphemer the one who saw heaven opened. So the pattern of the rejected righteous reaches Stephen, who follows his Lord — condemned on a religious charge, executed outside the city — and in that fellowship of suffering shares his Lord's vindication.
