Acts 8:22 → Jeremiah 8:6

Echo

Later text

Acts 8:22BSB

Repent, therefore, of your wickedness, and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive you for the intent of your heart.

Earlier text

Jeremiah 8:6BSB

I have listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone has pursued his own course like a horse charging into battle.

Significance

Peter's summons — "Repent, therefore, of this wickedness, and pray... that the intent of your heart may be forgiven you" — takes up the prophetic call to repentance, sharpened by Jeremiah's lament that "no one repents of his wickedness, saying, 'What have I done?'" (Jer 8:6). Even for a man so far gone as Simon, the door of repentance stands open; the demand to turn is itself a mercy. Christ-terminus: the forgiveness Peter holds out is the very gift the exalted Jesus was raised up to give — "repentance... and forgiveness of sins" (Acts 5:31). Grace does not merely warn Simon; it calls him, as it calls every hardened heart, to turn and to live, for the Savior delights to forgive the intent of a heart that will finally cry, "What have I done?"
