Significance

To save Saul from a plot on his life, his disciples "took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall" — a deliverance that recalls Rahab lowering the spies "by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall" (Josh 2:15). God preserves His newly called witness through the same kind of humble, hidden escape by which He once preserved the spies at Jericho. Christ-terminus: the Lord who guarded His servants then guards Saul now, for the persecutor-turned-preacher is indispensable to the mission of the risen Christ. No plot of men against Christ's messengers can thwart the advance of His gospel; even an undignified nighttime escape in a basket serves the sovereign purpose that will carry Paul to the Gentiles and kings.
