Allusion

Later text

Romans 3:25BSB

God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.

Earlier text

Leviticus 16:14-15BSB

And he is to take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the mercy seat; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the mercy seat. Aaron shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and bring its blood behind the veil, and with its blood he must do as he did with the bull’s blood: He is to sprinkle it against the mercy seat and in front of it.

Exodus 25:17-22BSB

And you are to construct a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat, one cherub on one end and one on the other, all made from one piece of gold. And the cherubim are to have wings that spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the mercy seat. Set the mercy seat atop the ark, and put the Testimony that I will give you into the ark. And I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony; I will speak with you about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

Significance

Paul says God "presented Him as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood" (Rom 3:25) — where the word rendered "atoning sacrifice" is ἱλαστήριον (hilastērion), the exact term the Septuagint uses for the kappōret, the golden "mercy seat" atop the ark (Exod 25:17-22 LXX), and for the place of atonement in the Day-of-Atonement rite where the high priest "sprinkle[s] the blood ... on the east side of the mercy seat ... seven times before the mercy seat" (Lev 16:14-15). Romans thus fixes Christ at the very spot where, once a year, atoning blood met the presence of God above the ark. The typology is textual, not imposed, and the five marks hold: a real historical furnishing and rite (Exod 25 / Lev 16), correspondence (the God-appointed place where blood turns away wrath and covers sin), escalation (bull's and goat's blood sprinkled in a curtained room gives way to Christ's own blood "put forward" in the open, "publicly," once for all), forward-pointing design (the annual repetition confessed that atonement was not yet finished, Heb 10:1-3), and retrospective interpretation supplied by Paul and Hebrews (Heb 9:5 names the hilastērion directly). It is at once promise-fulfillment: the mercy seat was the pledged meeting-place of covenant mercy, and God's "forbearance" in "passing over" prior sins (Rom 3:25b) is now shown to have been righteous because it looked ahead to this. The telos is God Himself enjoyed: Christ the mercy seat means the blood buys not merely acquittal but access — the sinner is welcomed to the throne of grace where God said "I will meet with you" (Exod 25:22), the wrath-averting blood becoming the door to the presence of the God who is now, in the crucified Christ, our propitiation and our delight.
