Intertextuality Pair

2 Corinthians 3:16 → Exodus 34:34

Allusion

Later text

2 Corinthians 3:16BSB

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Earlier text

Exodus 34:34BSB

But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded,

Significance

Paul adapts Moses's action of removing his veil when entering God's presence to describe conversion. Key interpretive move: Moses removed veil → anyone who turns to Christ has veil removed. The "Lord" in v.16 is Christ (cf. v.17 "the Lord is the Spirit"). Physical veil → spiritual veil over hearts; Moses entering presence → believer turning to Christ; Moses unveiled before glory → believer transformed by beholding glory.
