Significance: Paul's language of "the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col 2:2-3) draws directly on the vocabulary of Daniel 2:19-23, where Daniel blesses "the God of heaven" who "reveals the deep and hidden things," who "gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning," and who alone discloses to Daniel the king's mystery that no magician or wise man of Babylon could uncover. In Daniel, the hidden mystery is a single dream disclosed for a single generation — real wisdom, but partial and occasional, granted to one man for one crisis. Paul's claim in Colossians is categorically larger: the mystery of God is not a secret revealed once and exhausted but a Person, in whom the totality ("all") of wisdom and knowledge is permanently "hidden" — not hidden from the church, but hidden there for the church to find, as treasure is hidden for the one who knows where to dig (cf. Proverbs 2:3-6). Where Babylon's wise men could offer the king nothing, and even Daniel could only relay what God chose to disclose for the moment, Christ himself is the inexhaustible deposit of divine wisdom, freely opened to everyone in him. Paul's aim, against the Colossian false teachers offering esoteric extras, is exactly Daniel's aim before Nebuchadnezzar: to show that true wisdom belongs to God alone and is given, not achieved — so that the church, unlike Babylon grasping in the dark, already possesses in Christ every treasure it could ever seek.
