But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. Significance

Proverbs 8 gives personified Wisdom her own voice to declare that she was with the LORD "before His works of old" (v.22), "brought forth" before the deeps and mountains (vv.24-25), and present "as a skilled craftsman at His side" while He founded the heavens and set the sea's bound (vv.27-30)—the OT's most extended account of creation done by divine Wisdom. Hebrews 1:2-3 gathers exactly this Sapiential grammar onto the Son "through whom He made the universe," "the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word." The lexical bridge runs through the Second-Temple development of Prov 8: ἀπαύγασμα ("radiance") is the very word Wisdom of Solomon 7:25-26 applies to personified Wisdom, the "brightness of eternal light" and "image of His goodness"—now transferred to Christ as the creation-mediator and divine effulgence. This is Longitudinal Theme (the canon-wide Wisdom motif: Prov 8 → Sir 24 → Wis 7 → Heb 1) reaching its identification in the Son — the NT's identification of Christ as the Wisdom of God — not typology: Wisdom in Prov 8 is a personified divine attribute, not a historical person, so the marks of a valid type (historicity, an institution that escalates to an antitype) simply do not apply—the connection is identification, not foreshadow-and-figure. Crucially, the link does not make the Son a creature: the disputed qānāh of v.22 ("created/possessed") and the LXX ἔκτισέν με that fueled the Arian reading are answered by Prov 8's own "from everlasting I was established" (v.23) and by Hebrews' frame—the Son is the agent through whom the universe was made (1:2) and the one who upholds it (1:3), confessed by Nicaea as "begotten, not made." The eternal Wisdom who delighted "day by day" in the LORD's presence (v.30) is no abstract principle to be admired from afar but the Son in whom God's glory becomes visible and embraceable—so that to behold Him is to behold the wisdom of God grown desirable, the One who, having "provided purification for sins," sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
