Genesis 50:22-26BSB

Now Joseph and his father's household remained in Egypt, and Joseph lived to the age of 110. He saw Ephraim's sons to the third generation, and indeed the sons of Machir son of Manasseh were brought up on Joseph's knees. Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely visit you and bring you up from this land to the land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." And Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath and said, "God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones up from this place." So Joseph died at the age of 110. And they embalmed his body and placed it in a coffin in Egypt.

Significance

Dying in Egypt at 110, Joseph told his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely visit you and bring you up from this land to the land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," and bound them by oath: "God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones up from this place" (Genesis 50:24-25). Generations later "Moses took the bones of Joseph with him" (Exodus 13:19). Hebrews 11:22 sums up the scene, "By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones," naming the coming departure with ἔξοδος (G1841). The tie is clear, a direct reference to the narrative. Joseph's faith rested not on Egypt's honors but on God's sworn word; his coffin waiting in Egypt (50:26) was a standing promise that God would come. Hebrews shows where that hope lands. The Son shared our humanity so that "by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death" and "free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death" (2:14-15). Joseph faced death trusting that God would act; believers face it knowing that Jesus has already passed through death and broken its hold.
