Earlier text
Isaiah 53:12BSB
Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.
Alludes to fourth Suffering Servant song. "He bore the sin of many" connects Christ's sacrifice to Day of Atonement imagery. Context of Isaiah 53: carried sickness, wounded for transgressions, guilt offering, bore iniquities (53:4-5, 10-12). Reinforces substitutionary atonement. The Suffering Servant motif interprets Christ's death as vicarious—he bore "the sins of many" (not his own), fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy. The once-for-all emphasis contrasts with repeated Levitical sacrifices, while the eschatological note ("to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him") orients hope toward Christ's return.
