Significance

Before the verbatim fourfold citation of 1 Peter 2:9, Peter sounds the Exodus 19:6 note for the first time at 2:5: believers, "like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." The phrase holy priesthood (Greek ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον) draws on the same Septuagint vocabulary that defines Israel at Sinai — βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα ... ἔθνος ἅγιον ("royal priesthood ... holy nation," Exod 19:6 LXX) — fusing the ἱεράτευμα ("priesthood") of v. 6a with the holiness modifier of v. 6b. The original meaning of Exod 19:6 is Israel's pre-covenant vocation declared at the mountain: Yahweh's mamleket kōhănîm, a people set apart to mediate his presence to the nations, a vocation offered on the condition "if you will indeed obey My voice." Peter does not yet quote the verse as a block (that comes four verses later, the Direct-Quotation node); here he weaves its terminology into his own temple-and-stones architecture, so this is an Allusion rather than a formal citation — verbal dependence on the LXX lexeme, deployed in Peter's own construction. The road to Christ is Promise-Fulfillment joined to the Longitudinal Theme of the priesthood of God's people, not typology: Exod 19:6 is a covenantal vocation whose very words are taken up and realized, the conditional Sinai offer becoming accomplished reality in those built on Christ "the living stone" (2:4) — the church now is the holy priesthood Israel was summoned to be, its "spiritual sacrifices" the consecrated worship that the Aaronic system only shadowed. The telos: this priestly access is "through Jesus Christ" — the believer's nearness to God, once hedged behind the boundary at the foot of Sinai (Exod 19:12, 23), is now an open and joyful drawing-near; to behold Christ here is to behold the Mediator who makes the despised "living stones" into a house where God is gladly worshiped — priesthood not as burden but as the desirable, freely-given privilege of dwelling near to God.
