Later text

1 John 2:8BSB

Then again, I am also writing to you a new commandment, which is true in Him and also in you. For the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining.

Earlier text

Isaiah 9:2BSB

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

Significance

John's declaration that "the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining" echoes Isaiah's messianic prophecy: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone." Isaiah 9:1-7 prophesies a great light breaking into Galilee's darkness, culminating in the birth of the child who bears divine titles (Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace). John's "true light already shining" is inaugurated-eschatology language — Isaiah's prophesied light has arrived in Christ, though the darkness has not yet fully passed. The "already/not yet" framework is embedded in John's "fading... already shining."
