When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sounding of the ram's horn, and the mountain enveloped in smoke, they trembled and stood at a distance. "Speak to us yourself and we will listen," they said to Moses. "But do not let God speak to us, or we will die."
John's declaration "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment" contrasts sharply with Israel's response at Sinai: "When all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning... the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off" (Exod 20:18). They begged Moses: "Do not let God speak to us, lest we die" (v.19). At Sinai, the dominant response was terror — even Moses trembled (Heb 12:21). John declares that in the New Covenant, "perfect love" has replaced fear entirely. Fear "involves punishment" — precisely what Sinai threatened: "whoever touches the mountain shall die" (Exod 19:12). Hebrews 12:18-24 provides the interpretive bridge, contrasting the terror of Sinai with the grace of the heavenly Jerusalem.
