And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.

Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
John's prayer assurance — "If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us" — echoes Jeremiah's covenant promise to the exiles: "You will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart" (Jer 29:12-13). Both passages ground prayer confidence in God's covenant commitment to hear His people. Jeremiah's promise was given in the context of exile — a people far from God who nonetheless could approach Him — and John applies this same assurance to the New Covenant community. The condition "according to His will" parallels Jeremiah's "with all your heart" — both require alignment with God's purposes rather than selfish petition. What Jeremiah promised to the returning exiles, John declares fulfilled for those who are "in Him who is true."
