On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, saying, “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”
Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the LORD that faces east. And there at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, who were leaders of the people.
Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
Significance
Ezekiel saw "the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD," with "a figure like that of a man" on the throne, fell facedown, and then "the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me" (Ezekiel 1:26-28; 2:2); later "the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me" (3:12). John's vision opens on the same pattern: "I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet" (Revelation 1:10), with the command, "Write on a scroll what you see" (1:11). Spirit (G4151), hearing (G191) and a voice behind him line up with Ezekiel, and the trumpet (σάλπιγξ, G4536) recalls Sinai's "very loud blast" (Exodus 19:16). The tie is clear, an allusion of pattern rather than quotation. The difference is the face John sees when he turns: the voice belongs to "One like the Son of Man" (1:13), and like Ezekiel he falls, "I fell at His feet like a dead man" (1:17). But this glory lays a hand on him: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last, the Living One." (1:17-18). The figure on Ezekiel's throne has a name and a death and a resurrection, and His first word to a fallen servant is comfort.
