John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from Him who is and was and is to come, and from the seven Spirits before His throne,

Earlier text

Zechariah 4:2-7BSB

“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I replied, “with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps. There are also two olive trees beside it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left.” “What are these, my lord?” I asked the angel who was speaking with me. “Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered. So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts. What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain. Then he will bring forth the capstone accompanied by shouts of 'Grace, grace to it!'"

Significance

John's "seven spirits before His throne" draws on Zechariah's vision of a golden lampstand (menorah) with seven lamps, interpreted by the angel as representing YHWH's Spirit: "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts" (Zech 4:6). The seven lamps in Zechariah symbolize God's all-seeing, all-empowering presence accomplishing His purposes through His Spirit rather than human power. John transposes this imagery into a heavenly throne-room setting, where the "seven spirits" represent the fullness and perfection of the Holy Spirit in His sevenfold operation. The number seven conveys completeness: the Spirit's work is comprehensive and omnipresent. Zechariah 4:10 explicitly connects the seven lamps with "the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the whole earth," a link John develops further in Revelation 5:6.
