Intertextuality Pair

Revelation 2:27 → Psalm 2:8-9

Quotation

Later text

Revelation 2:27BSB

He will rule them with an iron scepter and shatter them like pottery—just as I have received authority from My Father.

Earlier text

Psalm 2:8-9BSB

Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance, the ends of the earth Your possession. You will break them with an iron scepter; You will shatter them like pottery."

Significance

Psalm 2 promises the messianic king will receive the nations as inheritance and rule them with an iron scepter, shattering them like pottery. Christ applies this messianic promise to believers, indicating they will share in His judicial authority over rebellious nations. This corporate solidarity with Christ's rule demonstrates that the church participates in executing divine judgment. The promise reverses the apparent powerlessness of persecuted Christians, assuring them of ultimate victory and authority alongside the conquering Messiah.
