Genesis 12:3BSB
I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you."
At the climax of the Aqedah the angel of the LORD re-pronounces the inaugural Abrahamic blessing of Genesis 12:3 — but in an intensified form. Where Genesis 12:3 declares that "all the families of the earth will be blessed through you" (bəkā, "in you"; niphal nibrəkû; mišpəḥōt, "families"), Genesis 22:18 swears that "through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed" (bəzarʿăkā, "in your seed"; hithpael hiṯbārəkû; gôyim, "nations"). The original promise was an unconditional call to a single man; here it is sealed by divine self-oath ("By Myself I have sworn," v. 16), grounded in Abraham's obedience ("because you have obeyed My voice"), and — decisively — re-channeled from Abraham himself to his zera. This is Redemptive-Historical Progression, not typology (no person or institution here prefigures Christ as antitype); the same covenant word is re-issued, deepened, and advanced within the patriarchal narrative — promise becoming sworn oath, "in you" narrowing to "in your seed." It is also Promise-Fulfillment in seed-form: the very wording that shifts the blessing onto the grammatically-singular zera is what Paul presses at Galatians 3:16 ("not 'to seeds'... but 'to your seed,' who is Christ"), so that Genesis 22:18 is the OT's own first move toward locating the Genesis 12:3 blessing in one offspring. And it carries the Longitudinal Theme of universal blessing-to-the-nations forward (Gen 12 → Gen 22 → Ps 72:17 → Isa 49:6 → Acts 3:25 → Gal 3 → Rev 7:9). The telos is sight unto savoring: the blessing first spoken to Abraham is now sworn by God upon a father's not-withholding of his only son — and the gospel reveals that the Seed in whom all nations are blessed is the Son the Father did not spare (Rom 8:32). To behold this is to find Christ desirable, for in Him the oath that God "could swear by nothing greater" reaches us, making the blessing of every nation as unshakable as the God who cannot lie.
