Exodus 20:24BSB
You are to make for Me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
Exodus 20:24 permits altar construction in various locations where God causes His name to be remembered, while Leviticus 17:3 restricts all slaughter to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting: "Anyone from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox, lamb, or goat in the camp or outside the camp" must bring it to the tabernacle. Leviticus narrows the sacrificial geography from multiple permitted sites to a single authorized location, ensuring that all blood is properly handled by the priests. This centralization of slaughter prevents the shedding of blood at unauthorized locations and eliminates the possibility of sacrificing "to the goat demons" (שְׂעִירִם, se'irim) at scattered rural altars (Lev 17:7).
