While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found the man gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation, and because it had not been declared what should be done to him, they placed him in custody. And the LORD said to Moses, "The man must surely be put to death. The whole congregation is to stone him outside the camp." So the whole congregation took the man outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
For six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on that day must be put to death. Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day."
Significance
The wood-gatherer narrative in Numbers 15:32-36 provides the test case for the Sabbath death penalty legislated in Exodus 35:2-3. Exodus prohibits all work (מְלָאכָה, melakhah) on the Sabbath on pain of death, specifically including kindling fire. Numbers records the first known enforcement: a man gathering sticks is brought to Moses, held in custody while God is consulted, then stoned outside the camp by the whole congregation. The narrative illustrates how the Pentateuch moves from legislation (Exodus) to application (Numbers), with God Himself confirming that even gathering fuel constitutes the "defiant sin" (בְּיָד רָמָה, beyad ramah, "with a high hand") described in the immediately preceding section (Num 15:30-31).

Longitudinal Theme — statute (Exodus 35:2-3) and enforcement narrative (Numbers 15:32-36) together display the capital seriousness of Sabbath holiness, feeding the canonical Sabbath-rest theme that culminates in Christ, Lord of the Sabbath, and in the Sabbath rest that remains for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9-10).
