Genesis 12:3BSB
I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you."
Balaam's third oracle (Numbers 24:9) directly quotes the Abrahamic blessing formula from Genesis 12:3: "Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those who curse you" (מְבָרְכֶיךָ בָרוּךְ וְאֹרְרֶיךָ אָרוּר). This verbatim quotation confirms that Balaam -- a non-Israelite prophet hired to curse Israel -- is compelled by God to pronounce the very blessing given to Abraham. The dramatic irony is profound: Balak hired Balaam to reverse the Abrahamic blessing, but instead Balaam ratifies it. The allusion demonstrates that God's covenant promise to Abraham remains operative and irrevocable, even when invoked by a pagan prophet against his employer's wishes.
