Significance

Exodus 13:2 commands: "Consecrate to Me every firstborn male. The firstborn from every womb among the Israelites belongs to Me, both of man and beast." (firstborn: בְּכוֹר, bekhor) Numbers 3:11-13 implements this command through substitution: God takes the Levites "in place of every firstborn" as His own possession. The Levites thus serve as a living redemption of Israel's firstborn, replacing the individual obligation with a corporate dedication. This connection demonstrates the principle of substitutionary service at the heart of Israel's worship system -- one tribe stands in the place of every family's firstborn, freed to serve God full-time because the entire nation's firstborn debt has been transferred to them. The Hebrew makes the exchange explicit: God takes the Levites תַּחַת כָּל בְּכוֹר (tachat kol bekhor, "in place of every firstborn," Num 3:12).

Connection Method(s)
Longitudinal Theme — a strong verbal parallel ("substitution for firstborn of Israel"), the pair absorbed within the composite citation-chain Ex 13:2, 12 → Num 3:11-13 // 8:16-18. The substance of the connection sits at Numbers 3:12-13 (this file is addressed at the pericope-head 3:11; the shared firstborn-collocation — peṭer reḥem / bekhor — co-occurs in only five verses in the Hebrew canon — Ex 13:2, 15; Num 3:12; Num 8:16; Num 18:15 — all within the firstborn-consecration network)
