In the first month of the second year after Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai:

Earlier text

Numbers 5:2BSB

"Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.

Significance

Numbers 5:2 commands the removal from camp of anyone who is unclean through skin disease, discharge, or corpse contact. Numbers 9:6-7 reveals the practical consequence of this rule: certain men who were unclean through corpse contamination could not celebrate the Passover at the appointed time and came to Moses asking, "why should we be excluded from presenting the LORD's offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?" This internal Numbers cross-reference shows the purity exclusion of chapter 5 creating a specific pastoral problem that the delayed-Passover provision of chapter 9 was designed to solve, demonstrating how different laws within Numbers interact and necessitate further legislation.

Longitudinal Theme — the exclusion law of Numbers 5:2 creates the crisis the delayed-Passover provision of Numbers 9 resolves, and the resolution itself feeds the Passover theme: God makes a way for the defiled to keep the feast rather than lose it, a trajectory that culminates in Christ our Passover sacrificed for us (1 Corinthians 5:7), who cleanses the unclean for the table.
