Deuteronomy 13:15 → Exodus 22:20

Allusion

Later text

Deuteronomy 13:15BSB

you must surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword. Devote to destruction all its people and livestock.

Earlier text

Exodus 22:20BSB

If anyone sacrifices to any god other than the LORD alone, he must be set apart for destruction.

Significance

Exodus 22:20 decrees that one who sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be "set apart for destruction" (חֵרֶם, cherem), and Deuteronomy 13:15 applies this חֵרֶם principle to an entire apostate city: "you must surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword. Devote to destruction all its people and livestock." The progression from individual punishment (Exodus) to communal destruction (Deuteronomy) reflects the escalated threat when apostasy becomes corporate rather than individual. Deuteronomy specifies that even the city's spoil must be gathered and burned, preventing anyone from profiting from idolatry's destruction—the חֵרֶם ban is total, consuming persons and property alike.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — Exodus 22:20's חֵרֶם sentence on the individual idolater is advanced to the corporate case: the apostate city devoted to destruction — the guarding of exclusive worship progressed from personal sanction to communal statute for the settled land.
