So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.'

Earlier text

Deuteronomy 6:10-11BSB

And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land with great and splendid cities that you did not build, with houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, with wells that you did not dig, and with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied,

Significance

Deuteronomy 6:10-11 catalogs the unearned blessings God will give: "cities that you did not build, houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, wells that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant." Joshua 24:13 echoes this exact list in past tense: "I gave you a land... cities which you did not build... vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant." The transformation from future promise to past-tense declaration marks a decisive redemptive-historical moment—Joshua can now testify that every element of Moses's promise has been fulfilled. The repeated phrase "you did not" (לֹא, lo + verb) emphasizes pure grace: Israel's inheritance is entirely gift, not achievement.
