Later text

Judges 1:18-19BSB

And Judah also captured Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron—each with its territory. The LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had chariots of iron.

Earlier text

Joshua 13:2-3BSB

This is the land that remains: All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites, from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—that of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites;

Significance

Joshua 13:2-3 catalogs the Philistine pentapolis (Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, Ekron) as territory still unconquered at the end of Joshua's career. Judges 1:18-19 presents Judah's partial success in capturing Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron, but immediately qualifies this with Judah's inability to dispossess the valley inhabitants because of their iron chariots (רֶכֶב בַּרְזֶל, rekhev barzel). This juxtaposition establishes a recurring pattern in the land inheritance theme: God's promise of the full land (נַחֲלָה, nachalah) is certain, but Israel's failure to take complete possession creates the ongoing tension that drives the narrative from Judges through the monarchy.
