Significance

Jephthah's defense echoes Deuteronomy 2:26, where Moses sent messengers (מַלְאָכִים, mal'akim) with words of peace (שָׁלוֹם, shalom) to Sihon king of Heshbon. By citing this precedent, Jephthah argues that Israel had first pursued peaceful passage through Amorite territory before Sihon's refusal forced military engagement. The parallel between Moses sending peace envoys to Sihon and Jephthah now sending messengers to the Ammonite king reinforces the diplomatic pattern: Israel's territorial gains resulted not from aggression but from others' refusal of peaceful terms. Moses had sent these peace envoys to Sihon from the Wilderness of Kedemoth (Deut 2:26), the same posture of first-seeking-peace that Jephthah now claims for Israel's dealings with Ammon.

Redemptive-Historical Progression, Analogy — Jephthah's denial that Israel seized Ammonite land rests on Moses' peace embassy to Sihon from Kedemoth (Deuteronomy 2:26) as a fixed, binding stage of the story his own generation inherits; and his own sending of messengers deliberately mirrors Moses' peace-first pattern, aligning his diplomacy with the covenantal precedent he cites.
