Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.

Significance

In 1 Kings 11:2, the narrator states regarding Solomon's foreign wives: "These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, 'You must not intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.'" The warning the narrator recalls stands first at Exodus 34:15-16, where God warns at Sinai: "Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods (וְזָנוּ אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהֵיהֶם, vezanu 'acharey 'eloheyhem) and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices." Solomon's marriages enact the scenario the Sinai covenant warned against — his "wives turned his heart after other gods" (1 Kings 11:4), the outcome Exodus 34:16 warned foreign marriages would bring. The link is the shared warning and its outcome, not shared wording: the "turn your hearts" idiom is not in Exodus 34.

Connection Method(s)
Promise-Fulfillment — the Sinai warning that covenant with the peoples of the land would draw Israel into their gods' worship (Exodus 34:15-16) is realized in the narrator's verdict on Solomon: the quoted clause "surely they will turn your hearts after their gods" (1 Kings 11:2) comes true as his wives turn his heart and he follows Ashtoreth and Milcom (1 Kings 11:4-5), the threatened word of the covenant proving itself in Israel's wisest king.
