1 Chronicles 2:3BSB

The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanite. Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, who put him to death.

Earlier text

1 Kings 4:31BSB

He was wiser than all men—wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.

Significance

In 1 Kings 4:31, the wise men surpassed by Solomon — Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda — are called "sons of Mahol." The Chronicler's genealogy in 1 Chronicles 2:3ff identifies Heman, Calcol, and Dara as sons of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah. This places the proverbially wise men of Israel within the Judahite genealogy, establishing that Solomon's God-given wisdom (חָכְמָה, chokhmah) exceeded even the most celebrated sages from Judah's own lineage, confirming the divine origin of his exceptional insight.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — the Chronicler's Judah register fixes Heman, Calcol, and Darda — the sages Solomon surpassed (1 Kgs 4:31) — inside Zerah's line (1 Chr 2:6), gathering even Israel's proverbial wisdom into the documented history of the tribe whose line carries the promise forward to David and his greater Son.
