Later text

1 Chronicles 28:4-6BSB

Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father's house to be king over Israel forever. For He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah He chose my father's household, and from my father's sons He was pleased to make me king over all Israel. And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—He has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. And He said to me, ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build My house and My courts, for I have chosen him as My son, and I will be his Father.

Earlier text

Genesis 49:8-12BSB

Judah, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the necks of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down to you. Judah is a young lion—my son, you return from the prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness, who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes and the allegiance of the nations is his. He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest branch. He washes his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.

Significance

Genesis 49:8-12 promises that "the scepter will not depart from Judah" and that Judah's brothers will bow to him. David in 1 Chronicles 28:4 explicitly claims this oracle's fulfillment: "the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father's house to be king over Israel forever. For He chose Judah as leader (נָגִיד)." David traces a direct line from Jacob's tribal blessing to his own anointing, identifying God's election of the tribe of Judah, then the house of Jesse, then David himself as the progressive unfolding of Genesis 49's promise. The continuation in 28:5-6, where God chooses Solomon to build the temple and promises "I will be his Father," extends the Judahite promise beyond military supremacy into the priestly-royal domain of temple building, combining the scepter imagery of Genesis 49:10 with the dynastic promise of 2 Samuel 7.
