Significance

The Chronicler's Levitical genealogy (1 Chr 6:1-4) begins with the three sons of Levi—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—drawn from Genesis 46:11's list of those who entered Egypt with Jacob. From this Genesis starting point, the Chronicler extends the Kohathite line through Amram, Aaron, and Eleazar down to Zadok and beyond, tracing the high-priestly succession. Genesis 46:11 provides the root; the Chronicler builds the entire priestly genealogical tree from it, connecting the pre-Egyptian patriarchal family to the post-exilic Zadokite priesthood. The Amramite line named here (1 Chr 6:2-3) includes not only Aaron but Moses and Miriam, situating Israel's lawgiver and prophetess within the same Levitical household that produced the priesthood.

Longitudinal Theme — Genesis 46:11 plants the root (Levi's three sons entering Egypt) from which the Chronicler grows the whole high-priestly tree down to Zadok and the exile (1 Chr 6:1-15); the pair marks the earliest and latest stations of the one priesthood thread that spans the canon from the patriarchal family to the Second Temple and points beyond itself to Christ's priesthood.
