Later text

2 Chronicles 2:2BSB

So he conscripted 70,000 porters, 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors.

Earlier text

1 Kings 5:13-18BSB

Then King Solomon conscripted a labor force of 30,000 men from all Israel. He sent them to Lebanon in monthly shifts of 10,000 men, so that they would spend one month in Lebanon and two months at home. And Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor. Solomon had 70,000 porters and 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, not including his 3,300 foremen who supervised the workers. And the king commanded them to quarry large, costly stones to lay the foundation of the temple with dressed stones. So Solomon's and Hiram's builders, along with the Gebalites, quarried the stone and prepared the timber and stone for the construction of the temple.

Significance

The Chronicler's note that Solomon "conscripted 70,000 porters, 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors" (2 Chr 2:2) parallels the labor force described in 1 Kings 5:13-18. Both texts detail massive conscription for the temple project, though the numerical differences between the accounts likely reflect different stages or categories of the workforce. The scale of labor in both versions underscores the magnitude of the temple project—a construction endeavor requiring the mobilization of the entire nation's resources for God's dwelling place.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — The 70,000 porters, 80,000 stonecutters, and 3,600 supervisors of 2 Chronicles 2:2 re-present the same workforce recorded in 1 Kings 5:13-18 ("70,000 porters and 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains," 1 Kgs 5:15), the Chronicler carrying the Kings record forward to the head of his temple narrative as the mobilization of a whole people for God's dwelling place — the dwelling finally realized in Christ, in whom the building rises into a holy temple.
