2 Chronicles 2:4 → 1 Kings 5:5

Allusion

Later text

2 Chronicles 2:4BSB

Behold, I am about to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God to dedicate to Him for burning fragrant incense before Him, for displaying the showbread continuously, and for making burnt offerings every morning and evening as well as on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts of the LORD our God. This is ordained for Israel forever.

Earlier text

1 Kings 5:5BSB

So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: 'I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name.'

Significance

Both texts record Solomon's declaration of intent to build the temple. In 1 Kings 5:5, Solomon tells Hiram "I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God," invoking the Nathan oracle. The Chronicler's version (2 Chr 2:4) expands Solomon's statement with liturgical specificity: the temple is for "burning fragrant incense before Him, for displaying the showbread continuously, and for making burnt offerings every morning and evening" (qetoret sammim, ma'areket tamid, olot). This liturgical detail connects the temple's purpose to Mosaic worship regulations, grounding Solomon's building project in Torah.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — Solomon's declared intent of 1 Kings 5:5, "I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God," spoken out of the Nathan promise, is re-presented in 2 Chronicles 2:4 with its ordained liturgy spelled out (fragrant incense, continual showbread, morning-and-evening burnt offerings, "ordained for Israel forever"), the Chronicler carrying the earlier declaration forward and rooting the temple's purpose in the Mosaic worship whose substance is Christ.
