2 Chronicles 20:31 → 1 Kings 22:41

Allusion

Later text

2 Chronicles 20:31BSB

So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.

Earlier text

1 Kings 22:41BSB

In the fourth year of Ahab's reign over Israel, Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah.

Significance

Both texts provide the regnal introduction for Jehoshaphat, noting he became king at age 35 and reigned 25 years. They agree on the positive evaluation that he "walked in the way of his father Asa." However, the Chronicler places this summary at the end of four chapters of extensive material about Jehoshaphat (2 Chr 17-20), including his judicial reforms, the miraculous victory over the Moabite-Ammonite coalition through worship and prayer, and prophetic interactions — all absent from Kings. The Kings account by contrast devotes most of its Jehoshaphat material to the Ahab alliance and the Ramoth-gilead campaign.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — the two regnal notices are the same canonical datum carried forward: 1 Kings 22:41-42 introduces Jehoshaphat (thirty-five at accession, twenty-five years, mother Azubah daughter of Shilhi) at the head of the Kings summary, while the Chronicler repeats the notice nearly verbatim (2 Chr 20:31) only after four chapters of reform, judicial renewal, and the LORD's victory (2 Chr 17-20), re-presenting the earlier record so the post-exilic community reads the reign through what seeking God accomplished.
