2 Chronicles 25:1 → 2 Kings 14:1

Quotation

Later text

2 Chronicles 25:1BSB

Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.

Earlier text

2 Kings 14:1BSB

In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz over Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.

Significance

Both texts introduce Amaziah's reign with the same formula: age 25 at accession, 29-year reign, his mother Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. Both give a qualified evaluation — Kings: "he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David had done" (2 Kgs 14:3); Chronicles: "but not wholeheartedly" (2 Chr 25:2) — a middling assessment that neither fully commends nor condemns. The Chronicler significantly expands the account to include Amaziah's hire and dismissal of Israelite mercenaries, an unnamed prophet's warning, and the theological explanation for his later defeat: "because they had sought the gods of Edom" (2 Chr 25:20).

Redemptive-Historical Progression — 2 Chronicles 25:1 re-presents the accession formula of 2 Kings 14:1-2 (twenty-five at accession, twenty-nine years, mother Jehoaddan of Jerusalem) as the Chronicler advances the canonical history toward his expanded theological account of Amaziah's half-hearted obedience and Edomite idolatry, re-narrating the earlier record for the post-exilic community's instruction.
