2 Chronicles 28:1 → 2 Kings 16:1

Quotation

Later text

2 Chronicles 28:1BSB

Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. And unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD.

Earlier text

2 Kings 16:1BSB

In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham became king of Judah.

Significance

Both texts introduce Ahaz's reign with one of the most negative evaluations in Judah's history: "he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD" but instead "walked in the ways of the kings of Israel." Both record his horrific practice of passing his son through the fire (הֶעֱבִיר בָּאֵשׁ, he'evir ba'esh) and his worship at high places. The Chronicler in 2 Chronicles 28:1ff expands the account of divine judgment through military disasters — massive defeats by Aram and Israel resulting in 120,000 killed and 200,000 captives — interpreting these as direct consequences of Ahaz's apostasy.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — 2 Chronicles 28:1 re-presents the accession notice of 2 Kings 16:1-2 with the same damning verdict — unlike David his father, Ahaz "did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD" — as the Chronicler carries the canonical history forward into his expanded account of judgment through Aram and Israel, pressing the Davidic story through its lowest point toward the faithful Son the line still awaits.
