You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves, using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf,
Leviticus 24:5 mandates the regular preparation of the showbread loaves — twelve loaves of fine flour (סֹלֶת) — for the sanctuary table. (The construct לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים, "bread of the Presence," stands at Exodus 25:30; 35:13; 39:36; 1 Samuel 21:6; 1 Kings 7:48; and 2 Chronicles 4:19 — Numbers 4:7 has the related "table of the Presence" — not in Leviticus 24:5, which names the flour and loaves.) 2 Chronicles 29:18 records Hezekiah's reform officials reporting that they have "cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the showbread (שֻׁלְחַן הַמַּעֲרֶכֶת) with all its utensils." The Chronicler lists the showbread table among the sacred furnishings that had been neglected and defiled under Ahaz, implying that the regular bread arrangement prescribed in Leviticus 24 had been discontinued. Hezekiah's restoration of the table and its vessels represents a return to the Levitical sanctuary routine that prior kings had abandoned.
