Earlier text

Leviticus 24:5-9BSB

You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves, using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf, and set them in two rows—six per row—on the table of pure gold before the LORD. And you are to place pure frankincense near each row, so that it may serve as a memorial portion for the bread, an offering made by fire to the LORD. Every Sabbath day the bread is to be set out before the LORD on behalf of the Israelites as a permanent covenant. It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place; for it is to him a most holy part of the offerings made by fire to the LORD—his portion forever."

Significance

Leviticus 24:5-9 prescribes the perpetual maintenance of the showbread (לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים): twelve loaves arranged on the pure table every Sabbath as an "everlasting covenant." 2 Chronicles 29:18 reports that Hezekiah's reform restored "the table of the showbread (שֻׁלְחַן הַמַּעֲרֶכֶת) with all its utensils," which had been defiled during Ahaz's reign. The Chronicler's inclusion of the showbread table alongside the altar and other furnishings implies that the entire Levitical sanctuary service had collapsed — the weekly bread arrangement, the perpetual lamps, and the altar sacrifices. Hezekiah's reform demonstrates a king who deliberately reinstates the Levitical regulations as the standard for faithful worship.
