Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to his father David. This was the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. Solomon began construction on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.
"Take your son," God said, "your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you."
Significance
The Chronicler uniquely identifies Solomon's temple site as "Mount Moriah" (הַר הַמּוֹרִיָּה, har hammoriyyah, 2 Chr 3:1), the same "land of Moriah" (אֶרֶץ הַמֹּרִיָּה, 'erets hammoriyyah) where God directed Abraham to offer Isaac (Gen 22:2). This is the only passage in Scripture that explicitly equates the two locations, forging a theological link between Abraham's foundational act of sacrificial obedience and the permanent house of worship built on the same ground. The place where God provided a ram in place of Isaac (Gen 22:14, "on the mountain of the LORD it will be provided") becomes the place where Israel's ongoing sacrificial system is institutionalized, embedding the memory of divine provision into the temple's very geography.
