Later text

2 Chronicles 32:24BSB

In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. So he prayed to the LORD, who spoke to him and gave him a sign.

Earlier text

2 Kings 20:1BSB

In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: 'Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.'"

Significance

In 2 Kings 20:1, the prophet Isaiah tells Hezekiah, "Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover." The Chronicler in 2 Chronicles 32:24 compresses the entire illness narrative into a single verse: "In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. So he prayed to the LORD, who spoke to him and gave him a sign." The Kings account provides the full dialogue, Hezekiah's prayer facing the wall, and God's response adding fifteen years. The Chronicler's compression reflects his focus on the temple and liturgy rather than the personal drama of the king's illness.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — 2 Chronicles 32:24 opens with the very words of 2 Kings 20:1 ("In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill") and then compresses the whole narrative that verse begins into one line of prayer, answer, and sign; the Chronicler takes up the earlier account and moves it directly to its theological sequel of pride and humbling (32:25-26), advancing the canonical history of the Davidic house.
