Earlier text

Numbers 28:16-25BSB

The fourteenth day of the first month is the LORD's Passover. On the fifteenth day of this month, there shall be a feast; for seven days unleavened bread is to be eaten. On the first day there is to be a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work. Present to the LORD an offering made by fire, a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, all unblemished. The grain offering shall consist of fine flour mixed with oil; offer three-tenths of an ephah with each bull, two-tenths of an ephah with the ram, and a tenth of an ephah with each of the seven lambs. Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. You are to present these in addition to the regular morning burnt offering. Offer the same food each day for seven days as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. It is to be offered with its drink offering and the regular burnt offering. On the seventh day you shall hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.

Significance

Numbers 28:16-25 prescribes the complete Passover and Unleavened Bread festival calendar: the fourteenth-day Passover, the seven-day feast of unleavened bread, and the specific burnt offerings (two bulls, one ram, seven lambs) to be presented each day. 2 Chronicles 35:16 reports that at Josiah's Passover, "on that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for celebrating the Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD." The Chronicler's emphasis on completing all prescribed offerings "according to the command" validates Josiah's reform as a comprehensive return to the Numbers legislation, not merely a symbolic gesture but a full enactment of every sacrificial detail the Torah required.

Connection Method(s)
Longitudinal Theme — Numbers 28:16-25 fixes the festal statute ("The fourteenth day of the first month is the LORD's Passover") with its seven days of prescribed burnt offerings, and 2 Chronicles 35:16 records that statute functioning whole under Josiah: "the entire service of the LORD was carried out for celebrating the Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD." The developing institution of Israel's appointed feasts carries the Mosaic calendar into monarchic worship and forward to its fulfillment in Christ, the true Passover sacrifice.
