Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your kinsmen the lay people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites.

Earlier text

Numbers 18:3BSB

And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.

Significance

Numbers 18:3 assigns the Levites to attend to tabernacle duties while warning they "must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die." 2 Chronicles 35:5 records Josiah commanding the Levites to "stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families" during his great Passover. Josiah's reform restores the Numbers 18 order of service, stationing Levites in their proper divisions after generations of cultic disorder under Manasseh and Amon. The Chronicler emphasizes that this Passover was conducted according to "the word of the LORD given by Moses" (2 Chr 35:6), directly linking Josiah's practice to the Mosaic legislation.

Longitudinal Theme — Numbers 18:3's charter for Levitical service (attending "to all the duties of the Tent" while barred on pain of death from the altar and sanctuary furnishings) and Josiah's order that the Levites "stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families" (2 Chr 35:5) belong to one developing institution of graded, mediated worship, the wilderness ordinance still ordering Israel's greatest Passover centuries later — a structure of mediation that finds its end in Christ the true Mediator.
