2 Chronicles 36:11 → 2 Kings 24:18

Quotation

Later text

2 Chronicles 36:11BSB

Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years.

Earlier text

2 Kings 24:18BSB

Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.

Significance

Both texts introduce Zedekiah, Judah's last king, with the same formula: age 21 at accession, 11-year reign, mother Hamutal. Both give the negative evaluation "he did evil in the sight of the LORD." The Chronicler adds crucial details about Zedekiah's spiritual failure: "He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD" and "he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD" (2 Chr 36:12-13). This characterization of Zedekiah as the king who refused prophetic warning provides the theological explanation for the final catastrophe that follows.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — 2 Chronicles 36:11 repeats 2 Kings 24:18's accession data for Judah's last king (twenty-one years old, eleven years in Jerusalem) but pares away the mother's name and moves straight to the indictment that Zedekiah "did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet" (36:12); by retelling Kings' final accession formula from the far side of the exile, the Chronicler turns a court record into the opening of his theological verdict on why the kingdom ended — and why the story does not end there (36:22-23).
