Allusion

Later text

2 Chronicles 8:17-9BSB

Then Solomon went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth on the coast of Edom.

Earlier text

1 Kings 9:26-28BSB

King Solomon also assembled a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. And Hiram sent his servants, men who knew the sea, to serve in the fleet with Solomon's servants. They sailed to Ophir and imported gold from there—420 talents—and delivered it to Solomon.

Significance

The Chronicler's extended account of Solomon's Ophir expedition (2 Chr 8:17-9:12) parallels 1 Kings 9:26-28's briefer notice about the fleet Solomon built at Ezion-geber. Both texts record the maritime partnership with Hiram of Tyre and the acquisition of Ophir gold. The Chronicler merges the trade narrative with the Queen of Sheba visit that immediately follows, creating a unified portrait of Solomon's international prestige. The gold from Ophir (zahav Ophir) becomes a symbol of the temple-era prosperity that the Chronicler presents as the fruit of faithful Davidic kingship.

Connection Method(s)
Redemptive-Historical Progression — The Chronicler retells 1 Kings 9:26-28's Ophir expedition in the same sequence — Solomon at Ezion-geber and Eloth on Edom's coast, Hiram's ships and experienced sailors joined to Solomon's servants, and Ophir gold delivered to the king (2 Chr 8:17-18, reporting 450 talents where Kings reads 420) — re-presenting the earlier canonical account of the fleet for the post-exilic community as evidence of the blessing that attended the temple-builder's reign.
