Ezra 1:6 → Exodus 12:36

Allusion

Later text

Ezra 1:6BSB

And all their neighbors supported them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuables, in addition to all their freewill offerings.

Earlier text

Exodus 12:36BSB

And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians.

Significance

Exodus 12:36 emphasizes that the Egyptians gave so freely that Israel "plundered" (וַיְנַצְּלוּ, vaynatselu) them, while Ezra 1:6 describes neighbors supplying the returning exiles with articles of silver and gold along with freewill offerings. Both passages portray pagan peoples enriching the departing covenant community at a moment of divinely orchestrated liberation. The shared vocabulary of silver, gold, and goods (כְּלֵי כֶסֶף וּכְלֵי זָהָב, keley kesef ukhley zahav) links the two events, and the inclusion of "freewill offerings" (נְדָבוֹת, nedavot) in Ezra 1:6 adds a cultic dimension—these gifts are directed toward rebuilding God's house, much as Israel's Egyptian plunder was later consecrated for the tabernacle.
